Weleda Wild Rose Skincare

We love to feature brands with a history, and Weleda is one such company. Since it was founded in 1921 as a pharmaceutical laboratory with its own plant garden, it has been growing plants organically and creating natural health and wellbeing products for almost 100 years. Its founder, Dr. Rudolf Steiner along with Dr. Ita Wegman, and a team of scientists created the first synergistic products orchestrated to reconnect the body with its natural rhythms. All products within the brand are NATRUE certified; the first internationally recognised quality seal for organic and natural beauty products.

The rose enjoys almost legendary status among flowers; the ancient Babylonians cultivated rose blooms to produce scented ointments from their petals. In early China roses were specifically grown in terraced plots for their regenerating effect, and people used rose petals for gargling and for healing baths. Distillation of rose oil began in Persia, and the essential oil was considered extremely valuable as its recovery was, and still is, incredibly expensive. It takes three million flowers to produce just one litre of rose oil. Today there are countless varieties and scents, with approximately 150 species of wild rose, almost two-thirds of them from Asia.

Weleda’s holistic approach to skincare involves using ‘lead plant’ philosophy to show skin the path back to self-regulation and healthy balance. When it comes to helping skin become more resilient to change, the Weleda Wild Rose facial range is particularly helpful especially when skin lacks vitality and appears dull. The smoothing, softening and revitalising qualities of the wild rose immediately restores radiance.

Weleda Wild Rose Skincare Range

The first thing we noticed about all of the products from the Weleda Wild Rose Skincare range was the utterly gorgeous smell. Too often rose scented skincare products can give off a synthetic smell as there is hardly a real drop of rose in the mix. Here, the organic Rosa Mosqueta seed oil combined with soft petals of damask rose, makes all the products smell like a freshly picked bouquet. The blended herbs help to combat ageing, softening lines and maintaining skin tone and balance.

With the recent heatwave, we found the Weleda Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Lotion to be such a tonic. It was incredibly cooling, light and quickly absorbing. Oil from organically-grown musk rose seeds, blended with extracts from toning horsetail and precious myrrh, are combined with damask rose petals resulting in the heavenly scent.

The Weleda Wild Rose Smoothing Day Cream would be the better choice during the autumn and winter months. It has a slightly heavier texture to combat dryness, and includes the same organically grown Rosa Mosqueta seed oil.

Itchy eyes from hay fever also benefited from the Weleda Wild Rose Smoothing Eye Cream which is a delicate, unperformed cream. The ingredients includes time-honoured eyebright to soothe tired or irritated eyes, while organic musk rose seed oil contains unsaturated fatty acids, which is perfectly suited to the delicate skin around the eye area. The cream definitely helped to calm puffy eyes, and smoothes away dryness.

The last product we tried was the Weleda Wild Rose Night Cream. It quickly went to work on dry and dehydrated skin, resulting in a plump complexion in the morning. Organically-grown wild musk rose seed-oil blends are combined with evening primrose, myrrh and other natural ingredients. Skin felt replenished, and unlike a number of night creams, it didn’t feel heavy or greasy, but nourished.

Since Weleda‘s conception in 1921, the company has been studying the connection between nature and people, and how by harnessing the power of plants, this can have an impact on the person as a whole. Each Weleda product range is carefully selected with a specific skin and hair type in mind. Today, the brand is represented in over 50 countries on all five continents. The three main sites are still where Weleda’s history began: in Arlesheim, near Basel in Switzerland; in Schwäbisch Gmünd near Stuttgart in Germany and in the French city of Huningue, Alsace.

We are always great champions of companies who use a genuinely holistic approach backed by sound scientific study, and the Weleda Wild Rose skincare range couldn’t have been a nicer introduction to the brand.
