Weleda Skin Food

14 September 2020

Since the launch of Weleda’s original Skin Food in 1926, the iconic NATRUE-certified moisturiser has steadily become known as a ‘best kept beauty secret’, attracting a loyal following including many high-profile fans such as Julia Roberts, Winona Ryder, Victoria Beckham and Adele amongst others. This unique product has certainly stood the test of time; a tube now sells every 16 seconds thanks to its versatile, nourishing and effective formulation. We love Weleda products but had never tried the Skin Food range before, and it’s been a revelation!

The original formulation remains unchanged – a time-honoured; combination of pure plant oils, protective waxes and therapeutic plant extracts of biodynamic calendula from Weleda’s own medicinal herb gardens. Organic ingredients such as chamomile from Weleda’s farming partners in Kosovo, rosemary from Portugal and the finest organic sunflower seed oil from Hungary provide precious oil extractions. With each ingredient carefully selected for its skin-caring benefits, Skin Food is a much loved multi-tasking and multi-award winning product suitable for hands, face or body. Some people may find the original formulation a little too heavy for the face, particularly during summer months, and we have been preferring to use it on our hands as an overnight treatment. However, we look forward to trying as a face cream during the winter months.

Our absolute favourite is Skin Food Light which has a lighter texture, leaving skin feeling soft, smooth and instantly hydrated and is perfect for the face. It’s made with the same key ingredients as the original but is much better suited to oily or combination skin. This new formulation still includes skin-healing calendula, soothing chamomile, smoothing viola tricolor and revitalising rosemary, but also contains organic cocoa seed butter from farming partners in Peru, together with organic shea butter from Burkina Faso, and the cream glides on beautifully. We couldn’t believe the instant glow to the skin, and skin still looked luminous at the end of the day. The cream is naturally scented with essential oils of sweet orange and lavender for a slightly fresher but nonetheless instantly recognisable Skin Food fragrance, and is also suitable for use on hands, face or body.

Lips have really suffered during the summer months, not helped by the wearing of masks, so we were on the hunt for a great new lip balm. The Skin Food Lip Balm is lightly perfumed with natural essential oils and has a rich texture which upon application, instantly hydrates dry or chapped lips helping to protect against the elements. Restorative rosemary, soothing viola tricolor, chamomile and calendula, combined with natural waxes in a nourishing transparent balm, create the perfect combination to provide long-lasting moisturisation that leaves lips feeling soft and supple. The balm is also suitable for those intolerant to gluten.

Come winter, we will be lathering on  Skin Food Body Butter which is formulated with a host of nourishing ingredients. It smells absolutely delicious, too! Cocoa butter and shea butter are combined to create a rich and luxurious whipped texture, with essential oils of rosemary, calendula, chamomile and the aromatic resin of the benzoin tree. Although a thick texture, it’s really easy to apply and quickly absorbs into the skin, unlike many other rich body creams, there is no hanging around waiting for it to dry. And as with all the other Skin Food products, skin still feels incredibly nourished and moisturised hours later.

As the colder weather arrives, we can’t recommend Skin Food highly enough. The pricing of the range is unbeatable, too. Affordable skincare which really delivers immediate results from Weleda, a company with such an impressive heritage of natural and cruelty-free beauty.
