BIOEFFECT EGF Serum Celebrates Its 10-Year Anniversary

28 August 2020

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of BIOEFFECT and its best-selling EGF Serum, the company have launched an exclusive 50 ml Limited Edition which will contain double the concentration of EGF. BIOEFFECT have collaborated with the Icelandic-born artist, Shoplifter, to create a beautiful piece of art which was inspired by nature.

The new bottle has an iridescent sheen and nestles in a sculpture originally handmade in clay and then produced in black cold-cast resin. It references elements of Icelandic nature: obsidian rock, natural volcanic glass, black barley, black sand beaches as well as Iceland’s numerous black lava fields.

It’s no wonder that the award-winning EGF Serum has become a cult beauty due to its ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and restore a youthful glow. But what exactly is EGF and how does it work? Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) is one of the most important growth factors for skin as it helps to boost production of collagen and elastin to mantain healthy, dense and youthful skin. As we age from birth until adulthood, our bodies manufacture copious amounts of various growth factors that affect the growth of everything from bones to organs to nerves to skin. But when we reach maturity, production diminishes. As a result, cell turnover and repair slows, eventually affecting our health and appearance. In fact, our skin gets thinner by 1% each year after we turn 20, and five years after menopause, our skin becomes 30% thinner.

Three Icelandic scientists founded BIOEFFECT when they discovered a way, after a decade of research, to bioengineer a plant-based human replica of EGF. The scientists founded a method of growing a plant-based replica of EGF in barley. By engineering barley’s own genetic code for growth so that it most resembles human EGF, BIOEFFECT created barley-based EGF. Because barley is self-pollinating, there is no risk of cross-breeding. In addition to being safe, pure, and efficient, BIOEFFECT’s EGF is grown in a carbon emissions-free greenhouse in inert volcanic pumice, using pure Icelandic water enriched with nutrients.

The ecologically-engineered greenhouse is nestled in the lava fields of Reykjanes Peninsula and can nurture up to 130,000 barely plants at a time. The barley plants can be grown all year round due Iceland’s sustainable geothermal energy.

BIOEFFECT does not not rely on the usual self-assessment studies that are so prevalent in the skincare industry. Instead, they have undertaken approximately 50 scientific in-house studies, most of which are double-blind placebo-controlled efficacy studies lasting from 2 months up to 3 years. The results of these studies clearly show that topical application of growth factors has a powerful effect on skin rejuvenation processes. The efficacy studies are also backed up by independent clinical studies. In an independent double-blind split-face study, BIOEFFECT EGF SERUM demonstrated up to 30% increase in skin density and 60% increase in skin thickness.

We have been using the EGF Serum for three weeks; just 2 to 4 drops applied to clean skin in the evening, and have noticed a considerable difference in skin upon waking. The nice thing about the serum, is that it is fragrance free and feels very light. We are huge fans of Iceland having visited many times, and are always super impressed with its always progressive attitude resulting in it being the greenest country in the world, and its pride in its renewable energy programs. We can’t think of a better country to entrust the health of our skin.
