Ryan Mosley at Alison Jacques Gallery

3 August 2011

We recently popped in to Alison Jacques gallery (just opposite the Sanderson Hotel) to see the Ryan Mosley exhibition.  This artist has been garnering great reviews of late and it’s easy to see why.

The canvases are infused with the ebullient energy of the theatre, carnival and cabaret. Top hats, strange motifs, mysterious fauna plus futuristic and shamanic figures all feature.

Mosley’s visual language is both bewildering and familiar. For instance, menacing truncheons are mixed in along with more traditional botanical references (see above).

We particularly loved the portraits in oval frames (how refreshing) and the way in which the artist has exaggerated moustaches, ears and noses (even adding a devon’s horn here and there).

This is a relatively small space, but if you’re in the Berners Street area, We really recommend making the effort to visit this special exhibition. Afterwards why not round off your afternoon with a refreshing cocktail at the Sanderson …

Ryan Mosley at Alison Jacques Gallery runs until 13 August 2011.
