Seafresh Fish & Chips – Pimlico, London

On a recent visit to Pimlico we had the opportunity to visit one of the most famous ‘chippies’ in London – Seafresh. Established in 1965 this well known local restaurant and take-away is also this year celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.

As we all know there is nothing like a good plate of fish and chips. Sadly, what we get in most places is, to paraphrase an old joke, ‘nothing like a good place of fish of chips’. This is especially true in London where every corner pub or local cafe serves up their version to unsuspecting tourists and passers-by.

Fortunately Seafresh keeps the flag flying for our traditional speciality, even if the owner Anastasis Leonidou lends a Greek angle to the proceedings, with excellent houmous and calamari also on the menu, alongside some Greek desserts and wine. There is plenty more of course, with a wide variety of fish alongside lots of starters and daily specialities.

The fish is delightfully fresh; delivered daily from Billingsgate Market. The batter light, and the chips nicely crisp and un-fatty. Those wanting the most authentic experience can order from the take-away section of the shop, whilst a more leisurely meal can be taken in the adjacent ninety-cover restaurant. We enjoyed some wonderful fresh taramasalata with pita bread and a ‘retro’ 1970’s style glass of Mateus rose, and an ice cream desert (missing only an umbrella) before winding up with a surprisingly good, and rather more 21st century, cappuccino. Wonderful, and all for less than £20 a head.

Our waiter had worked at Seafresh for 28 of the restaurant’s 50 years, which fitted in with the relaxed family vibe of the restaurant. We knew we were in a truly traditional spot, as the group of Greek locals at the adjacent table broke out the Tavli (Backgammon) and settled in for a long evening with a bottle of robust red wine. We could have been at the local fishing harbour, but who cares whether that’s in Greece or England when the fare is this good!
