Hotel Ta' Cenc and Spa, Gozo

Hotel Ta’ Cenc sits on the island of Gozo’s highest point. Nestled in the middle of a bird sanctuary, this peaceful retreat is spread across 400 acres of beautiful grounds with spectacular views across Gozo, neighbouring Malta and Comino. But as with some five-star properties, the gardens never feel too manicured or contrived, but rather totally at ease in their natural setting.

Charming stone bungalows or ‘trullos’ are dotted throughout fragrant gardens, and in keeping with the local style, rooms are decorated with wood, local stone, and marble. The colour palette comprises soothing taupes, blues and greys, with all of the modern facilities you would expect, including your own private terrace or garden.

There are two outdoor swimming pools; one of which includes a mini pool for children and a jacuzzi, whilst the second one is the quieter adults pool.

Ta’ Cenc also has its own private beach. Kantra beach is located in the rocky fjord inlet of Mġarr ix-Xini which benefits from the most glorious of settings. Perched on a cliff, the seafood restaurant serves up the catch of the day, and just below there are sunbeds, umbrellas, and shower/toilet facilities. Steps lead down further to the small beach. A minibus service, which takes you directly there from the hotel takes just five minutes and is complimentary. Kantra Beach is open in high season only.

For lunch and dinner, Il- Carrubo restaurant offers Italian cuisine as its specialty, along with Gozitan and other superb international dishes, giving the possibility to choose from à la carte or a daily set menu. The fresh homemade pasta and all the dishes are prepared by the team of Italian and Gozitan chefs. We especially loved the terrace where you can dine under the shade of ancient olive trees.

The Wellness Spa has blended seamlessly with the surroundings, incorporating the same trullo style of the hotel suites. It includes an indoor/outdoor heated swimming pool, gym, steam room, finnish sauna, and jacuzzi. There are a team of therapists on hand, and we recommend the heavenly Garden Flavours aromatherapy massage.

Few hotels can boast a 17th century palazzo within their grounds. The Ta’ Cenc Palazzo Palina, once a former home of a member of the Knights of St. John, has been lovingly restored to create a delightful venue for conferences, weddings or other occasions. Historians estimate that Palazzo Palina was built between 1697 and 1720, during the rule of Grand Master Ramon Perellos Y Roccaful.

It’s no wonder that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt chose Hotel Ta’ Cenc as their base during the filming of By the Sea. They filmed at the bay, Mġarr ix-Xini which lies in a gorge to the west of Mġarr harbour. It really is the only place to stay on Gozo.
