At the Chapel, Restaurant with Rooms - Bruton, Somerset

28 April 2014

Hauser & Wirth already have five dazzling respective gallery spaces in London, New York and Zurich. But their latest opening on 15 July will be somewhere altogether sleepier: Bruton, Somerset. This summer, the 17-century Durslade Farm – along with its accompanying 200 acres – will be transformed into a futuristic contemporary art gallery and education centre. The arrival of Hauser & Wirth, who represent artists such as Martin Creed, Ron Mueck and Paul McCarthy, will place the quaint town of Bruton firmly at the centre of the next big happening in the art world.

At the Chapel, Restaurant with Rooms - Bruton, Somerset

One of the first glimpses of things to come is the delightful At the Chapel. A small boutique hotel (8 rooms), restaurant, bakery and wine shop. Its lofty white walls and minimalist feel are just made for serious art, and fortuitously as the owners are friends with H&W Somerset, they’re able to borrow some amazing pieces to adorn the walls.

The listed chapel has been beautifully preserved but also enhanced by the thriving dining space. This is a very buzzy restaurant indeed (with loud acoustics!) and pizzas are the speciality coming straight from the bakery’s wood-fired oven. The lunch and dinner menu are the same, but there’s ample choice.

Although we didn’t stay the night on this occasion, we’re advised that rooms are similar in look and feel to the main space: think whiter than white rooms, exposed rafters, and as you would expect, a fantastic selection of art books.
